How to Optimize Your Google Business Images

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but wouldn’t it be even better if a Google Business picture could be worth a thousand clicks? Not all images are created equal, so here are ways to ensure you get the most engagement.

Setting Up Your Google Business Profile

Even if you already have a Google Business profile, it may be worth it to review and ensure that every segment is filled out:

  • Ensure that your business category accurately portrays your business and that you choose the maximum amount of locations.

  • Add your contact information, including your website and phone number (if desired).

  • List your hours.

  • Create a succinct business description.

  • Describe your services or products.

  • Ensure you verify your business. This may be done through a text message or a postcard sent to your business address.

The goal is to give Google and your viewers the main reasons why your business should be chosen.

Set Up Your Profile Images

According to Google’s Profile Image Guidelines:

  • Use only high-quality images. Low-quality, blurry images may be removed. Avoid screenshots, stock photos, GIFs, collages, heavily edited or otherwise manipulated photos, or imagery created by other parties.

  • Focus on the location. Images where something other than the place is the main focus, such as selfies that emphasize a person or group, is less helpful for people trying to decide where to go. Create the media at the location you’re posting to.

  • Photo format. JPG or PNG.

  • Size. Between 10KB and 5MB, 720px tall by 720px wide (minimum of 250px tall by 250px wide)

  • Videos can be up to 30 seconds long, up to 75MB, with a resolution of 720p or higher.

Types of Photos You Can Add

  • Logo: This helps potential customers recognize your brand.

  • Cover photo: Set a cover photo at the top of your profile that best represents your business.

  • Business photos: Add different images to highlight features of your business to attract and inform customers.

    • Exterior and Interior Photos

    • Product or Service Photos

    • Rooms and Common Areas

    • Staff or Team Photos

Update Your Photos Regularly

Photos play a significant role in attracting potential customers. Visual content is powerful and can capture attention much faster than any written description. Updating your photos regularly can:

  • Ensure that your business is visually appealing and able to engage with your target audience effectively.

  • Showcase the latest products, services, or promotions, keeping customers updated and encouraging them to visit or revisit your establishment. Customers are more likely to trust and choose a business that showcases its offerings through vibrant and current visuals.

  • Increase your visibility in search results and within the Google Maps application. Keeping your photos up-to-date ensures that your business listing remains relevant and stands out among competitors.

Let’s Get Started

Every small business owner is a hero to me. Unless you own a small business yourself, it is not easy to see the time, effort, and sacrifice needed to make that business successful. But I get it. Like all other small business owners, we are the CEO, CFO, COO, and CIO. We are the sales and marketing team, the development and visionary team, the accountant, the IT department, the customer service rep, the admin assistant, and the receptionist. And all that is on top of our actual business: offering a service or product and doing it better than our competitors.

Not every business owner has the time or expertise to create a professional website and write relevant content consistently, not to mention the knowledge to utilize SEO or social media to its fullest extent.
